Jamal Kalkaji was a columnist for The Washington Post and was known for critical articles on the authorities in Saudi Arabia. He lost the second of October 2018 during a visit to the Consulate of his country in Istanbul. Riyadh denied his disappearance, but after some time, Saudi authorities were forced to admit that the journalist was killed in a quarrel with consular officers. The international community strongly condemned the crime, calling on Riyadh to conduct a transparent investigation.

In December last year in Saudi Arabia, the court sentenced to death five accused in the murder of Kalkaji. Three involved got 24 years of imprisonment. Only in this high-profile case were 11 people. The Prosecutor’s office of the Kingdom stressed that all who were found guilty, appeared in court.
