The EU has called for a ceasefire and negotiations in Libya

BRUSSELS, April 25 – RIA Novosti. EU high representative for foreign Affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, and also the foreign Ministers of France, Germany and Italy called on Saturday for a humanitarian truce and resumption of negotiations between the parties to the conflict in Libya.

“the Conflict has continued without interruption, the events of recent weeks are a growing concern, especially in regard to the prolonged hardships faced by the people of Libya,” – said in a joint statement.

According to European politicians, “all actors in Libya should, in the spirit of the Holy month of Ramadan to resume peace talks” and to seek a political solution to the conflict.

These negotiations could not take place on the basis of the existing draft agreement dated February 23, which involves the creation of a joint military committees to monitor the ceasefire.

European politicians have also urged parties to the conflict in Libya to join efforts in the fight against the epidemic of coronavirus.

In Libya, the confrontation between the national consensus Government, which controls Tripoli and areas to the West of the country, and the Libyan national army under the command of Khalifa the Haftarot for a year trying to recapture the capital. Both sides claim that opponents are using weapons and manpower from the outside.

EU Countries along with Russia, USA, Turkey, Egypt took part in January in the international conference on Libya. The main outcome of the conference was the call for participants for a ceasefire in Libya and an obligation to refrain from intervention in the conflict, respecting an embargo on the supply of arms to the parties. In addition, the participants proposed to create a Committee for monitoring the implementation of the cease-fire.
