In Romania, the Senate adopted the draft law on the celebration of victory day over Nazi Germany on 8th and not the 9th of may, news agencies reported.

The Senate supported the announcement on 8 may “the Day of victory of coalition of the United Nations in the Second world war”, reports TASS, citing Agerpres.

MP from the National liberal party Ovidiu Raecke said that Romania wants to “correct the historical ambiguity, which is induced in the Communist period, celebrate the date of may 9, according to the Soviet model”.

He said that “being in the Soviet sphere of influence” socialist Republic Romania “recognized may 9 Victory Day”.

“However, the date, which is indeed for our country victory day is may 8, 1945,” said Raecke.

Further, the draft law will be reviewed by the Chamber of deputies.
