U.S. Secretary of state Mike Pompeo announced that the United States Consulate in Greenland for the first time since 1953, resumes its work. The opening took place on June 10.

According to Pompeo, the step reflects Washington’s desire to deepen cooperation with the people of Greenland and the whole of the Kingdom of Denmark, writes RIA Novosti. The American Consulate had worked in Greenland from 1940 to 1953.

Recall, back in late April, Pompeo announced the opening of the Consulate. It was also reported the US plans to allocate more than $ 12 million to strengthen its presence on this island, a part of an autonomy in structure of Denmark. It was emphasized that this installment is not relevant to previously expressed wishes of the President of the United States Donald trump to buy Greenland. The Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Fredriksen called the interest of America to purchase the Danish Autonomous region of Greenland “absurd.”
