QUITO, may 1 – RIA Novosti. The ex-President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, filed an appeal against the judgment whereby he was sentenced to eight years in prison on corruption charges, said the lawyer of the politician Fausto Herrin.

Correa in early April was sentenced by the Tribunal of the Supreme court of Ecuador. He also denied the right to engage in political activity during 25 years. A similar verdict to eight years of imprisonment – was imposed on former Vice-President Jorge Glas. In addition they were convicted 16 defendants, former officials of the government of Correa and the staff of private companies.

“We have filed an appeal against the verdict and a motion for his expansion and refinement”, the lawyer said Correa to reporters.

Previously, the lawyer said RIA Novosti that Correa intends to visit the country at the end of the year to participate in the electoral campaign in preparation for the presidential elections scheduled for February 2021.

currently, the ex-President is outside of Ecuador. In early November last year, the media reported that Correa allegedly asked the asylum authorities in Belgium, where he lives with his family, but the ex-President himself denied this information. Correa called the accusations a political show and has told RIA Novosti that it will not prevent him in the future to pursue a career in the country.
