The state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico has introduced a legislative ban on the sale of soft drinks, fast food, and other potentially harmful food products to minors, reported in the state legislature.

“the Legislative Assembly of Oaxaca agreed to amend the law on the rights of children and adolescents to prohibit the sale, distribution, donation or promotion to minors harmful to their health products, in support of the initiative by 31 deputies”, – quotes the text of the TASS announcement.

Oaxaca was the first region where Mexico will enter into force requirements of this kind. Their violation will be punished with fines, prohibition on business and even imprisonment for the term from six months to several years. Representatives of trade opposed the decision of the Parliament and vowed to prevent its implementation.

According to estimates of the Organization for economic cooperation and development, 75.2 per cent of the population of Mexico is around 97,5 million people – are overweight or obese. Because of the problems caused by this negative phenomenon, the loss of the country in the next 30 years may reach 5.3% of GDP.

Recall, according to Rospotrebnadzora, at the end of 2019 fast food and soda consumed about 78% of Russian schoolchildren. The head of Department, chief state sanitary doctor of Russia Anna Popova said that improper diet can lead to obesity and the development of endocrine diseases.
