Archaeologists have discovered several underground chambers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, reports the Times of Israel.

the Underground complex “hiding” under a white mosaic floor of the Byzantine building age from 1.4 thousand years. Three rooms on two levels connected by stairs, was used until the Roman siege of the city in the year 70 of our era, but their purpose scientists do not yet understand.

“This is a unique find. Underground rooms next to the Western Wall discovered for the first time”, — reads the statement of the Israel antiquities authority.

2 thousand years ago in Jerusalem, as in our days, it was decided to build from limestone. Therefore, it is not clear why it was cut large parts in solid rock under the ground, say archaeologists.

Perhaps the room used as shelter or even storage.
