asserts CNN citing a study that took conventional heartburn medication during hospitalization due to a new type of coronavirus patients had more than two times more likely to survive after infection.

As noted in the commentary to the study, it is unclear whether patients are better due to famotidine or it was just a coincidence.

“Based on what we learned in this study, this is encouraging… This relationship is really compelling,” says Dr. Joseph Conigliaro.

Famotidine on the market for almost forty years and is the active ingredient in popular over-the-counter remedies for the treatment of heartburn.

Among the 1536 patients in the study who did not take Famotidine, 332, or 22%, are either dead, or was intubated and placed on a ventilator. Of the 84 patients treated with famotidine, 8, or 10%, died or were transferred on artificial lung ventilation.
