Scientists from St. Petersburg state electrotechnical University “LETI” develop a system that is designed to identify dangerous debris in low earth orbit.

according to the press service of the University, the researchers propose to implement a multispectral system for video monitoring. It is designed to detect and classify objects in outer space.

Monitoring of space debris is now. For example, the use of radio telescopes. But their use for these purposes is costly, in addition, the radio telescopes can detect only objects greater than 10 centimeters.

the New system will allow not only to identify small items that will also be possible to immediately determine natural or artificial origin is an object and is a threat. The latter is very important, considering that space debris could be items from toxic materials dangerous to life and health of people.

Innovative monitoring system “LETI” proposes to establish on the spacecraft that appear in earth orbit. It is assumed that all the information about the detected objects will be promptly transmitted to Earth.
