This poem “the Gift vain, gift casual…” was a challenge. Challenge in the sky. Answered it the Metropolitan of Moscow Filaret. Today, through the centuries, something about writing these two people, in my opinion, it is extremely important for each of us.

it has Long been observed that depression likes to come on these birthdays. But the sense described by Pushkin, can hardly be called ordinary sadness. Rather, the despair, and let no one be confused by the restrained rigor of the verse:

the Gift vain, gift casual,
Life, why are you given me?
or why destiny secret
You condemned to death?

Who me hostile power
Of nothingness cried,
my Soul is filled with passion,
Um doubt thrilled?..

there is no Goal before me:
the Heart is empty, idle mind
And torments me with anguish
Monotonous life noise.

But what preceded the writing of these bitter lines?

In may, 1827, Pushkin finally gets permission to live in St. Petersburg. But on January 24, 1828 says: “the Noise and bustle of St. Petersburg become completely alien to me”.

he Writes at the time a little. What does he say? Near here, chronologically: a poem dedication to a certain poet and novelist V. S. Filimonov, here graceful appeal to the English artist George. Dow drawn the portrait of Pushkin, which is spoken in verse, alas, unknown. But Anna Olenina said, saying the careless poet, “you”, and the next Sunday he brings her flying Vasilisa “You and you”.

Among these elegant trinkets are dated may 19, 1828 poem “Memory” is amazing. Struck by the fact that before us absolutely other, saddened and frustrated by the search for the meaning of life Pushkin.

When “eke in silence
Hours of painful vigil.
In the omission of the night come on burn me
the Snake’s heart pangs”

Dreams simmer in the mind, depressed melancholy,
serious thoughts Crowding excess,
Memories silently before me
His long develops the scroll.
with disgust reading my life,
I tremble and curse,
And bitterly complain, and bitterly tears,
But the sad lines do not wash away.

How thin and accurate description of the feelings! However, these lines – not the whole poem. Realizing that the next recognition is so intimate that resemble his personal prayer, his deep personal repentance, Pushkin gives to the print the second verse of a poem. But it sheds light on how he perceived himself in those days in relation to destiny, to his life, given by God:

I see nothing, in a frenzy of feasts,
In a frenzy fatal freedoms,
In captivity, in poverty, in persecution, in the steppes
My lost years!
I hear once again the treacherous friends Hello,
the games of Bacchus and Kipridy,
And heart strikes again cold-light
Irresistible resentment.

Not just a complaint, humanly understandable and therefore close to us, ordinary people. e just the expense of the offense, brought to life “slavery, poverty, persecution” and even expulsion. Here is hard, sober assessment not the other, namely, myself. Note the line “madness is disastrous freedom…” – how accurate the insight.

And further:

And there is no consolation to me and be quiet before me
Up two Ghost young,
Two shadows cute two data destiny
Me an angel in the days of yore!
But both with wings and a fiery sword,
And guard… and taking revenge on me both
And I both speak a dead language
Of the mysteries of eternity and the grave.

Then we need an explanation. If you were paying attention, you probably noticed: any prayer of repentance carries an appeal to God. Any.

that’s Why the great prayer of repentance, the Fiftieth Psalm, king David begins with the words of appeal to God: “have Mercy on me, o God, according he did to thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgression…” it is based on a simple awareness of things: the person of God is not able to cope with their sins, your despair itself.

But Pushkin insomnia 1828, the year sees their guardian angels as guardians, moreover – as the Avengers. And that, in the opinion of any true believer, cut themselves off from God – because God’s power is perceived by the poet as hostile. But people left alone with his sin and is unable (or unwilling) for whatever reason, to cry out to the Lord (remember, as the Psalmist David – “from the depths I cry to You, o Lord…”) will never break out of the vicious circle of introspection. He is doomed to despair.

And Pushkin, in the words of Nicholas I, “the cleverest person of Russia”, this despair comes. Exactly a week after the “Memories” he’ll appreciate its purpose: “the gift in vain…” And this is the first precious lesson we should learn, by reading these verses.

Despair, formulated by Pushkin with a captivating beauty, the very fact that beauty and perfection of form was claimed to be the truth.

Despair of the poet could be a temptation for people who know only a hasty bitterness in search of the meaning of life. And therefore perfected in its beauty and perfection despair has ceased to be the private affair of the poet. All of it a sensitive and passionate heart Yelizaveta Mikhailovna Khitrovo, nee Golenishcheva-Kutuzov, the daughter of field Marshal, dear friend of Pushkin.

It was an amazing lady! Sixteen years older than Pushkin, she fell in love with him like a girl at first and wrote him a love letter, which, as they say, he was thrown into the fire without reading it. Then Elizaveta Mikhailovna managed to make friends with the poet, brought into the light Goncharov, had great connections…

ELISA, so called her in the light, as soon as possible lucky poem “the Gift in vain…” in Moscow, the Metropolitan of Moscow Philaret (Drozdov). And the Lord, setting aside the case, meets the most modern to Pushkin:

Not in vain, not by accident
Life from God given to me;
Not without the will of God a mystery
And sentenced to death.

I Myself am a wayward power
the Evil of the dark depths called;
He has filled the soul with passion,
Mind, doubt stirred.

Vspomnish me, forgotten by me!
Shine through the darkness of doom,
And builds thee
the Heart is pure, bright mind.

Some critics of Bishop blamed him easy verse – say, once a simple answer. But read – what does tact mean, who has the power of the Creator calls hostile. Not angry rebuke, but a gentle reproof.

as for simplicity, Yes, it is, but this simplicity – the top of it all. It is the simplicity of prayer. Himself verse, note, it ends as a prayer.

this simplicity in the complex, at first glance, the questions of life and death and Pushkin come – shortly before his death, he passed on the verses of the prayer of Ephrem the Syrian. He will love this simplicity, it imbued. And this is the second lesson for us is so easy plenaxis intricate complexity.

19 January 1930, Alexander writes “Stanzas”, devoting them to Metropolitan Filaret of Moscow (by the way, Philaret – great-great-grandfather of our contemporary, TV presenter Nikolay Drozdov).

the Poetry of Pushkin to the Lord is still undervalued, although all celebrate their amazing harmony. Before us – the divine beauty of humility

In the hours of fun Il idle boredom,
Sometimes, I try my
Committed to the effeminate sounds of
Madness, laziness and passions.

But then the strings sly
Unwittingly I ringing interrupted
When your voice is majestic.
I am suddenly struck me.

I was pouring a flood of tears unexpected,
And wounds my conscience
Your speeches fragrant
Encouraging clean oil.

And now a spiritual heights.
I hand you are stretching
And with his meek and loving
Humble violent dreams.

And then – the original text of the last stanza:

Your soul is warmed by fire
Rejected the darkness of earth’s vanities;
And listens to the harp of Philaret.
In the sacred horror of the poet.

See what makes Pushkin in the last stanza! Alexander slightly increases described feeling like he can’t keep his Muse from pranks – not cockiness, but a prank: humility does not make us slaves! – and to us through the ages flies smile of the living Pushkin. And this is another lesson of genius.
