A new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Old finds Gael García Bernal and his family aging immediately on a mysterious idyllic beach.

The most recent trailer for divisive director M. Night Shyamalan’s Old provides us a further glimpse at the filmmaker latest foray into horror, inviting us to enter the scenic, secluded shore that instills an extremely dark and mysterious secret. Featuring an ensemble cast led by Gael García Bernal, Old sees a mismatched set of strangers suddenly aging rapidly, reducing their whole lives into a single moment.

The film is inspired by the French graphic novel Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy and performer Frederik Peeters, using an insider previously revealing the Unbreakable director received a copy of the book for Father’s Day and was instantly enamored with the premise. Instantly purchasing the rights to the picture book, the storyline is said to have heavily inspired Shyamalan’s script for Old.

Centring a group of individuals on a perfect beach day, so they believed, the group all end up at the exact same secluded, idyllic cove filled with rock pools and sandy shore, encircled by green, thickly vegetated cliffs. But this utopia hides a dark secret. First there’s the dead body of a girl found floating at the crystal-clear water. Then there’s the strange fact that all the kids are aging rapidly. Soon everybody is growing older every half hour and there doesn’t appear to be some way out of this cove.

Old, that wrapped in November of last year, features an all-star ensemble cast led by Coco and The Motorcycle Diaries star Gael García Bernal as Jack, with Phantom Thread star Vicky Krieps as his wife, Kate.

Old sees Shyamalan return to the sort of existential terror story that has frequently served him so well previously, with all the film no doubt filled to the brim with all the kinds of turns and twists that audiences have come to expect from the man behind The Sixth Sense.

Old is just the first portion of M. Night Shyamalan’s new two-movie deal with Universal Pictures, together with another as-yet-untitled project currently slated for a February 2023 release date. Shyamalan has discussed the deal previously, suggesting that every one of the films could be linked in some way. “I simply had two movie thoughts I felt very strongly about,” Shyamalan said. “For me, there are thoughts and they’re in journals occasionally and they do not really have the meat or anything that thing is making it so I am prepared to commit two years of my entire life to creating this-to composing and directing this-some of those thoughts do not have that yet. They must gestate a little bit. However there were two ideas where immediately I had been thinking about creating them. And, interesting enough, there might be a third thing that came to me which could end up going in between these two. So, there might be .”

Old is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 23, 2021.
