August 5th is World Beer Day. The editorial staff of Comparison.org took this as an opportunity to use online searches to find out which varieties are most popular with Germans.

Top-fermented Kölsch is in first place with a total of 35,240 searches per month. The beer is considered a symbol of the city of Cologne and is traditionally served in small glasses, the so-called Kölsch bars. Because of the low CO2 content, it quickly becomes stale in larger glasses.

In second place is the trend drink craft beer with 27,820 monthly searches. Strictly speaking, this is not a type of beer at all, but the way it is made in small, independent breweries. The craft beer is characterized by a variety of different brewing methods.

The wheat beer, or as it is usually called in Bavaria, wheat beer, which is very popular in summer, secured third place. The characteristically cloudy drink records a total of 20,380 search queries per month and thus grabs the bronze medal in the comparison.

Close behind is the Indian Pale Ale, or IPA for short. The top-fermented and very hoppy beer was searched for a total of 19,320 times per month. The beers usually have a very intense, strong taste and often also a fruity note, for example papaya, passion fruit or citrus fruits.

The top 5 is completed by the Berliner Weisse. The mixed drink is usually enriched with either raspberry or woodruff syrup. Especially recently, many manufacturers have been trying to use cherries or elderberries. The drink is searched for online 18,490 times a month.
