In Portugal, the archaeologists during the excavation on the prehistoric site of Perdigones, district of Evora, found unique to the Iberian Peninsula to the ancient monumental structure.

according to The Portugal News Portuguese archaeologists call the found object “with Woodhenge”, that is wooden counterpart of the famous English Stonehenge.

This monumental structure was discovered on the territory of the monument, which is located in the South Central part of Portugal and that in 2019 has been declared a national heritage. According to the head of excavations Antonio Valera, it was a ceremonial circular structure with a diameter of 20 meters.

the Wooden pillars have not survived, but archaeologists have unearthed round “foundations” to which they were assigned. According to archaeologists, this property could be used for over 1400 years, since the end of the middle Neolithic (circa 3400 BC) to the beginning of the bronze age (about 2000 BC).

“This round design and was located in the center of the complex Perdigones, says antónio Valera. – The probability of entrance into this building is oriented to the summer solstice, indicating that it is cosmological in nature.”

Such a “henge” previously found not only in Britain but also mainland Europe, mainly in its Central part. However, for Portugal it is a unique find. Typically, these wooden circles served as a kind of astronomical calendar for the people of the Neolithic.
