the Bartender stole millions and four months he lived like a rich man. Conscience and fear forced him to surrender.

the Barman Dan Saunders from the Australian Outback figured out how to quietly steal millions of dollars, and started to binge. He lived lavishly and generously shared with the people he met on his way. And when I decided to give up, he found that his confession doesn’t care neither robbed the Bank nor the police. “Ribbon.ru” remembered his story.

Dan Saunders from the Australian town of Wangaratta stumbled upon a gold mine by chance. In February 2011, he had a late night out with friends at the bar “Bull’s head”. Came his turn to pay for drinks, but cash has not appeared. I had to go to the ATM.

On account of there were only three of the Australian dollar (a little less than 200 rubles), but the Australian was drunk and was hoping once to get out. When he inserted the card, the display shows: “At the moment the balance is unavailable”. Saunders then tried to translate 200 Australian dollars (11.5 thousand) with credit card. The ATM spat out the card and said “Transaction canceled”.

“Strange,” thought Saunders and inserted the card back. ATM continue refused to show the balance, but without wrangling gave 200 Australian dollars, which, according to the error message, failed to translate. The problem was solved. Saunders did not understand what had happened, went back to the bar and continued to have fun with friends. When everyone had gone, he again came to the ATM.

on the Morning of Saunders checked, you didn’t imagine it. But no, the bills from the magical ATM continue was in the wallet. He called the Bank to check the balance. He said that in a savings account is debt: two thousand Australian dollars (115 thousand). Although usually with savings accounts, you cannot withdraw amounts exceeding the balance, he succeeded.

Night Saunders went back to the ATM and tried to repeat the trick. He found that that amount should exceed the debt. In this case, the balance becomes positive again, and ATM agrees to give money. To remove two thousand, he had to translate four thousand, covering yesterday’s debt. Half the Aussie put on the account that was shared with his bride, and the rest ditched in a bar, buying a round for everyone.

the Official explanation of the strange behavior of the ATM has not appeared even after many years, however, AndERSA has a theory. He suspects that the night Bank servers was not available — that is why he failed to see the balance. Unplugged, ATMs continued to conduct operations and does not examine possible or not. As a result, the client can withdraw money, which he was not. Transactions had been recorded by the Bank only after the connection is restored, and then overturned, but by that time it was too late.

In the pub where Saunders worked as a bartender, was tote. In the evening he put all the money on one horse and lost it all. Borrowing at the ATM a few thousand, he again and again tried to fight back and a few days spent more than he earned in four months.

the town rumors that Saunders trades in drugs. Then his boss noticed that the somebody in one night lost a sum exceeding the betting turnover of over three weeks. The Manager suspected that Saunders was cheating, and although there was no evidence, decided to fire him. The bride also worried about the unexplained wealth of Saunders. She was scared that he contacted the crime, did not listen to his excuses and SMS announced that it wants to separate.

Left without a job and girl, Saunders decided to play big. Soon, on account of Saunders lay millions of dollars — of course, the same fictitious, as the first couple of hundred, taken at the ATM at the bar “Bull’s head”.

He gradually acquired a taste for it. “I remember, went to the Bank for money, and as soon as the employee saw my balance, her attitude towards me instantly changed, says the Australian. — People with millions in the account caused her reverence. I began to understand what it means to be rich. People treat you differently, behave quite differently”.

to avoid unnecessary questions, Saunders presented an investment banker working in the field of real estate.

the Fears were unfounded: the origin of his money no one cared. After learning about his millions, the men began to Express their genius business ideas and beg for investment. Women wealth too impressed, and, as Saunders in his backwater and dreamed.

the Aussie was walking vengeance. He dined at the most expensive restaurants and paid for everyone, traveled the world and stayed in suites, standing 18 thousand dollars per day. Once Saunders spent 120 thousand dollars to rent a 20-seater private jet.

“I Can say that the rest of the Bora Bora with models from Sports Illustrated is pretty funny,” he admits.

But most of all he liked to help others. Saunders has left a huge tip (he recently was a bartender and knew how important this is), settled neznanowow a homeless guy in a nice hotel (and then paid for the things he stole) and took a mansion for a Grand party that gathered the inhabitants of the cheapest hostels. To stop, according to him, it was impossible. “Feel like a secret agent, make money out of thin air and out partying,” he says.

Sometimes Saunders asked people, what they dream and tried to fulfill their dreams. “One I paid for by the University, other foreign trips, he says. — Sent one woman to Paris to learn French, because she always wanted to. Bought a car for a guy with a new company involved in shipping, so he could be himself. This kind of thing.”

During the four and a half months Saunders pulled 500 thousand Australian dollars (about 30 million). It was a fun time, but the farther, the more nervous he got. It was clear that sooner or later the Bank must realized it, and then the fun will come to an end.

the Aussie is getting worse sleeping at night and was startled by phone calls. It began to happen a panic attack.

“I Once had a nightmare, he recalls. — I dreamed that in front of my hotel room, sat down by the special forces. I woke up in a cold sweat, I realized that it was only a dream, and then the doorbell rang. “Well, this is it, I think. — They came for me” that really would be a relief. It turned out the maid. Asks: “do You need fresh towels?””.

Saunders did not know what to do next. He was thinking about how to withdraw millions from a Bank account, to head off to Spain, to Majorca and disappear. “Some part of me definitely wanted to do so, he says. — some part of me still wants to. But it’s hard to take forever to leave her family and friends. And when I began to think about it… I realized I needed to surrender to the authorities.”

in Summer 2011, Saunders stopped making fictitious transfers, said goodbye to new friends and began to prepare for the arrest. He consulted a lawyer who assured him that sooner or later it will find. Saunders didn’t want to wait. He called the Bank and told them everything.

he listened, promised to contact the police and they were asked not to use them. To the surprise of Saunders reaction followed neither the next day nor a week nor even a month. He did not call neither from the Bank nor law enforcement. The impression was that the stolen money, no one cares. “Who would have thought that the crime should I,” asked the Australian.

From guilt and the panic attacks he began to go to therapy. After hearing his story, the technician announced that not prepared to solve such problems. “Then I found the other, he was wiser, says Saunders. He wouldn’t tell me what to do or anything, but said that surrender is an important step that will clean your conscience and allow you to turn the page of my life.”

two years Later, after a call to the Bank, and not waiting for his arrest, Saunders told his story to the press. “In fact, it took three articles and a story on the Federal TV channel that I began to take it seriously,” he says. When the case finally came to court, Saunders admitted his guilt.

a year Later, he was released from prison and appointed him as a punishment of 18 months of community service. Saunders returned home, took a job as a bartender and gets a little more than minimum wage. In memory of adventures with millions in his pocket were only then bought costumes and other little things. Sometimes he wishes he had ran away to Spain, like going. But then he recalls meeting with his brother.

They got to talking at the height of the revelry, when Saunders was blowing money, flew around the world and drank wine that cost two thousand dollars a bottle. “You’ve changed”, — said the brother. “What do you mean?” — did not understand Saunders. “Just became very different — he replied. — You all right?”.

the Meeting was a turning point, after which Saunders began to think about returning. “I understand that, faced with temptation, it is easy to forget who you really are,” he says. Again to be in such a situation he does not want.
