1. FC Köln only recently qualified for the UEFA Conference League, but one thing is clear: the club is in financial difficulties. Managing Director Christian Keller has now confirmed this.

No money: The celebrations in Cologne about qualifying for the UEFA Conference League were quickly thwarted. Because managing director Christian Keller sees the club in a serious financial emergency. The “Effzeh” must therefore initially only be a development club in the next few years: “Otherwise we cannot get healthy. After all, we can’t get much sicker,” says Keller, humorously about the situation of the club.

Reorientation: “We have to create a performance orientation and get away from pure result thinking. We have to achieve our minimum sporting goals and at the same time get healthy. It’s a balancing act, and the ground on which we do this balancing act is very thin,” the managing director continues.

And if that doesn’t work? “Then the same thing will happen here in the next 30 years as in the last 30: Then we’ll still be in the elevator.” The last time 1. FC Köln qualified for European competition, the Rhein-Klub was immediately relegated the following season. Managing Director Keller’s worries are therefore entirely justified.
