Metropolitan, honorary rector of the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy cross Iona (Karpukhin) died in the city hospital number 50. This was reported on the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Metropolitan was 78 years old. The cause of his death was called pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus.

Karpukhin was born on 13 June 1941 in the family of a Moscow worker. After graduating from high school, he studied at the Moscow theological Seminary and Moscow theological Academy. In 1965 he became a novice of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, and was tonsured a monk.

In March 1991 he became rector of Holy cross Church in the Central district of Altufevo (from 1992 – honorary rector). In October 1992, Karpukhina was elected Bishop of Astrakhan and Enotaevsky, in March 2013 he became the head of the Astrakhan Archdiocese and was elevated to the rank of Metropolitan.

In 2016, after reaching the 75 anniversary pachislo to retire for health reasons.

As he wrote “the Rambler”, in Moscow for the time of the observation revealed 74 401 patients with coronavirus, 7573 of them have recovered, 764 died. Among those who were priests from Moscow churches and monasteries.
