Zelensky elections in the Donbass will be held after the return of Kiev control over the border with Russia

At the same time prescribed in the Minsk agreements, the order provides for the first elections in the Donbass.

KYIV, April 17. /TASS/. the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky reiterated that elections in Donbas must be held after the return of the border with Russia under control of the Kiev authorities, which is contrary to the Minsk agreements.

“We want to see great result. Great result — will return our territories, the withdrawal of illegal armed groups. Definitely going to control our border with the Russian Federation, and be sure there [in Donbas] elections”, the President said Friday on air of TV channel “Ukraine”.

“Everyone is talking about local elections, but it is important to get their territory first of all, he added. — The main thing for me would be troops and we go in. Then the boundary. Then election.”

At the same time prescribed in the Minsk agreements, the order provides for the first elections in the Donbas, after which the region is granted special status, and only then to commence the transfer of the Ukrainian side of the border with Russia.

both Russia And the Republic of Donbass repeatedly pointed to the inadmissibility of violation of the Minsk agreements. In particular, Russia’s permanent representative to the OSCE Alexander Lukashevich stated that this is a big problem.

“Subscribing to a number of obligations that Ukraine must fulfill in the framework of implementation of Complex of measures, Zelensky, apparently on the basis of the political situation, makes these kinds of statements that are alarming,” — said the permanent representative of the Russian Federation, specifying that Zelensky in this issue departs from the fundamental principles of respect for international agreements. “It really inspires a lot of anxiety. Especially given the updated roadmap which was agreed by all, including Mr Zelenskiy, in Paris,” the diplomat stressed.

the basis for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Donbass are the so-called Minsk agreements, which involve not only the cease-fire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons, Amnesty, the resumption of economic relations, but also carrying out a deep constitutional reform in Ukraine, the result of which should be the decentralization of power taking into account the special status of separate districts of Donetsk and Lugansk regions. However, until now, the plan remains unrealized.

the Ukrainian side has completely abandoned the implementation of the political clauses of the agreement, citing unresolved safety issues. Not carried out constitutional reform, to be enacted the law on the special status of the region adopted the law on elections in the Donbass. Instead, the Ukrainian side insists on the transfer of her land border with Russia.
