Researchers from the Beijing Institute of biotechnology said that the drug heparin, which is sometimes used for patients with coronavirus may increase the risk of death of patients. Preprint of their study is published in the portal MedRxiv.

This work has not yet been refereed by independent experts and editors of scientific journals.

The study included 61 patients with critical COVID-19, admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital Huoshan (Wuhan, China).

The researchers studied medical records for patients, which included demographic data, information on the number of platelets, heparin, and laboratory analyses associated with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia – a condition accompanied by increased bleeding and problems with stopping bleeding.

Of 61 patients, who were considered scholars, 15 survived and 46 died. Forty-one percent of patients (25/61) had severe thrombocytopenia. Of these, 76 percent (19/25) showed a decrease in platelets by 50 percent to the original level, 96% (24/25) of these patients died.

“the Impact of high doses of heparin may cause further severe thrombocytopenia with fatal outcome,” warned the researchers.

As reported by “Rambler” previously, scientists from the US said about the ineffectiveness of hydroxychloroquine in the fight against coronavirus. According to them, the mortality in the treatment of this drug were more likely than those who were being treated with antibiotics and antiviral drugs.
