The Maya Mountains are located in the southwest of the country. It includes the two highest peaks in the country, Doyle’s Delight, with 1124 meters above sea level, and Victoria, with 1120 meters. No fewer than 14 parks, reserves, sanctuaries and monuments protect most of the massif. It is crossed by nine major rivers.

Caye Caulker is a small island popular with tourists, especially backpackers. This is a good place to take diving lessons. The highest point on the island is just 2.4 meters. The entire island is therefore likely to be submerged in the event of a hurricane. Colorful dwellings are often built on stilts to deal with this threat.

The country has several important archaeological sites, such as Xunantunich, an ancient Mayan site. Her name means the Lady of Stone. There are six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces. Before the 7th century CE, only small houses could be found here. The site then began to grow.

The Great Blue Hole is an underwater cenote located off the coast of the country. It has a diameter of over 1,000 feet and a depth of 400 feet. Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau made it famous in the early 1970s by declaring it one of the top 10 diving sites in the world.
