The Internet platform “t-online” published an internal paper from September 2020 in which advisors to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) explained that Nord Stream 2 could no longer be used if gas demand fell and renewables were massively expanded are needed. This possibility exists “in principle”. The Greens member of parliament Hannes Damm then accused Schwesig on Wednesday of ignoring information from her own house about “better alternatives” than Nord Stream 2.
Schwesig had publicly stated that the technology for storing renewable energies was not yet mature. She also rejects gas imports by ship. However, no such assessment can be found in the department’s analysis. The paper also does not prove that Nord Stream 2 is such an “important economic factor” for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, as Schwesig often claims. The “sustainable added value” is rather low, they say.
