The media reported that scientists have created a diamond battery capable of working for 28 thousand years. Such a battery can power a pacemaker for a person’s entire life.

The development was presented by a startup from San Francisco, Nano Diamond Battery (NDB). Panel nanodiamonds were used to create the battery. Researchers grow miniature diamonds using chemical vapor deposition. In this process, gases at extremely high temperatures cause carbon to crystallize on the substrate material. The company combines the resulting nanodiamonds with radioactive isotopes from nuclear waste.

Such batteries can be used even in spacecraft, so that they work for years without recharging. Nano Diamond Battery startup wants to start selling the first devices with a diamond battery in 2022.
