to publish only the music that stands for itself – that is not possible in these days. Each artist makes just thoughts about whether he can release his new Single or his new Album now, as planned. He needs to explain it, if he so chooses and if he chooses not to. Not a few, Lady Gaga, and Billy Ocean, for example, have moved their new albums already, with a heavy heart and so on: Now is the time for fun music. Others, such as Pearl Jam, Dua Lipa and R’n’B-shooting star Jessie Reyez, go to the Now-only-right-way: The people need especially in these days something Nice to hang on to! Wrong Per se, none of the two approaches. A small special case, the Nine Inch Nails: Trent Reznor hadn’t planned to, until Recently, apparently, to publish right now, new music, and yet he has done it.

“Weird times indeed”, it means the opening in a Statement to “Ghosts V – VI” on the Band’s Homepage, so we live in really strange times. One variable just constantly between hope and utter despair, to explain to the Nine Inch Nails, and: “The music has always helped us to feel less all of the world.” Therefore, now, therefore, this is a new, out of nowhere, released double album. The Nine Inch Nails will present “Ghosts V – VI” as a direct artistic response to the corona of a crisis.

publish a two and a half hour Corona-the Soundtrack for the movie, looks strange. But after all, the business seems to go. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the two people behind Nine Inch Nails, don’t earn anything on “Ghosts V – VI”. Or almost nothing. The purely instrumental double album is also on Spotify and co. available and is flush on the way (allegedly) a few cents into the coffers, in addition, the Nine Inch Nails are now “an issue”, what is constructive. But: The two halves of this double album, “Ghosts V: Together” and “Ghosts VI: Locusts”, are offered on the website for free Download. A CD that you could buy, there isn’t (yet). The Nine Inch Nails give away this rather sprawling new plant – which is actually very nice.

position The music on “Ghosts V – VI” as a direct response to Corona, quarantine and Social Distancing, and still has a weird aftertaste. You don’t know exactly when these Songs were created. Here is the new music, the Fans already in 2019 had hoped? Some actually spontaneously Created? Or something actually Older? Trent Reznor has released in 2008, a “Ghosts”-series (I – IV) – a large collection of small song snippets and sketches throughout, without vocals and, indeed, intended to delight those Fans who want to Tinker with the NIN-raw material like to own music. Since 2008, Reznor has sure enough piled stayed for five double albums.

Somewhere between “Space Oddity”, Debussy, and John Zorn

especially “Ghosts V”, the “friendly” half of this double album sounds sometimes, after such a backlog of ideas from previous days. In “Letting Go While Holding On” repeated Reznor for ten minutes stoically a theme on the Keyboard while in the Background the outrageously expensive Computer conjure up. A bit of apocalyptic mood, a little bit of hope, somewhere in between “Space Oddity”, Debussy, and John Zorn. Especially the very minimalist moments of these Songs you could imagine on the NIN albums in the late 2000s and early 2010s-years. You can imagine, but it’s also good to sit with this music at the window and wondering when are you going to actually last, a butterfly can be seen.

What Reznor, however, presents on “Ghosts VI”, sounds very Output much stronger according to the new, current NIN. Exploded song structures, restlessness, a lonely trumpet picks up shortly before the death by grief, and a lot of noise to the listener in a little nervous: “Ghosts VI” in terms of “tightness” and experimentation directly to the three EPs, the Reznor with Nine Inch Nails last relatively close to each other, following published.

The tracks on “Ghosts V” are all beautiful in NIN style, the music on “Ghosts VI” is also without vocals, to the Interesting, which released the Nine Inch Nails in the last 15 years. In All, the new double-album also has significantly more cut than at the time, “Ghosts I – IV”. And of course: This music between dystopia, Chaos, and optimism is the best Soundtrack, the for the Corona-crisis – who else should deliver it, if not Trent Reznor? Nevertheless, the feeling remains: most of it we listen to now, perhaps only because Reznor had already had no use for it anymore.
