BRUSSELS, April 29 – RIA Novosti. The European Union is ready to proceed to the active phase of the operation IRINI control over compliance with the UN embargo on arms supplies to Libya, said Wednesday the representative a press-services of the European Commission, Peter Stano.

“At this stage, the state promised to provide three ships and three aircraft. This has been confirmed,” – said Stano at a press conference. Thus, according to him, the mission may go into an active phase.

At the same time, the European official admitted that the EU is experiencing difficulties due to the short duration of the preparation operation, the situation with coronavirus and internal approval procedures in a number of States.

the European Union on 31 March announced that it is launching a new naval mission IRINI control over compliance with the UN embargo on arms supplies to Libya. This operation will replace the mission of Sofia, which ended March 31. According to the EU statement, the new military mission to focus on preventing the smuggling of weapons to Libya by sea in accordance with resolution 2292 UN security Council. In addition, it will collect information on illegal exports from Libya oil and oil products, will contribute to the capacity building of the Libyan coast guard and Navy.

For tracing of illicit weapons across land borders and by air, the EU plans to use satellites and aircraft observations. This will allow to provide “competent authorities of the UN security Council” information on possible embargo violations.

the Headquarters will be located in Rome. The mandate of the mission IRINI will run until 31 March 2021.
