The Commission of the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) monitoring sent a request to the European Commission for democracy through law (Venice Commission) on the examination of the legal amendments to the Constitution of Russia. This is reported by “Vedomosti”.

The reason for the test was the petition against the amendments, signed by more than 200 thousand people.

The Venice Commission is an Advisory body on constitutional law at the Council of Europe. The opinion of the Commission is Advisory in nature.

As reported by “the Rambler”, the amendments to the Constitution of Russia proposed by President Vladimir Putin in January 2020. 20 January, he submitted to the state Duma a draft law. On January 23 the deputies adopted in the first reading, 10 March — second reading, and on March 11 in third reading.

On 11 March, the Federation Council approved the law. A nationwide vote on amendments to the Constitution was scheduled for April 22 but was postponed indefinitely due to pandemic COVID-19.
