Polish and Italian archeologists conducting excavations in Ethiopia, with the help of unmanned aircraft found the ruins of the ancient monumental buildings, the memory of which is preserved in local legends.

according to Nauka w Polsce, eight-day study was conducted in Northern Ethiopia in March 2020. The pandemic coronavirus it was terminated early. However, scientists have enough material to study.

the Venue for the examination they have chosen, focusing on a local legend. They say that once on a hilltop in Debre-Gergesa stood a majestic building.

“the Local population knows that once this place was a Christian Church, but it is not known when exactly it was and how it was arranged,” says Dr. Michela of Gaudiello, head of the research project.

for the First time in Ethiopia for such a large-scale archaeological investigations were used to the drone. With the help of scientists were able to detect traces of the structure, and then went to the place and started digging.

They managed to detect large stone pillars with a height of several meters and remains of walls. This is all that remains on the earth’s surface from the building. It really was built on top of a hill, dominating the surroundings.

during the excavations were found numerous fragments of pottery and stone block with a carved inscription on it. It was engraved on the Ethiopic. Scientists have begun to decipher this text.

On the block, and fragments of pottery, archaeologists have been able to pre-date the mysterious structure. According to their estimates, it was erected in the period from 700 to 1100 ad.

Scientists suggest that the building was a Christian Church. So, it was discovered, supposedly a fragment of the apse, the remains of a stone floor, which was located in a semicircular ledge of the building. Such elements typical of Christian churches.

by the Way, this sanctuary was located on the trade route that led from the “depths” of Africa Axum – the capital of the Christian state which existed in the first century ad.
