the First part of the Main project starts in Moscow in the city day on September 5. On the four facades of the Museum of Moscow, facing the courtyard, will show works of artists whose projects have won the competition announced by the Biennale, for the best site-specific project. The second part of the main project will present the projects of the winners of the curators. They will be shown in the Museum of Moscow in November. In addition to the main project, the program of the Biennale – nine special projects, extensive education and the parallel program. About the program the Main project of the Biennale in an interview “RG” told the Commissioner Alexey Novoselov.

What for you is included in the notion of “young art”? And is a young art, which became a full part of the gallery’s collection through the gift of the Fund of Vladimir Smirnov and Konstantin Sorokin (these works can be seen at the exhibition “Generation XXI”), from young art, which shows a Biennale? Or the youthfulness of the art is determined by the age of the participants?

Alexey Novoselov: If you talk about participation in Biennale for young art, the age limit is the only one that exists is important when submitting applications to the contest. Now can apply for any artist and the curator in the age of 35 years. We proceed not so much from a formal definition of what the youth under 35 years, how much of stanilesti and stages of education. This limitation consistent with its time, and the artist got into the Biennale, in the process, or immediately after school, but now the processes vary considerably, the scale of the additional art education increased. Many artists just starting to work independently in 30-35 years. They need support at this moment, and in the framework of the Biennale of young art they no longer fit. It is a matter of debate. Now looking for a solution for the next project, maybe we do a special age to 40 years.

How permeable the boundary between art, shown in biennales and the art in the Museum?

Alexey Novoselov: I am glad that the works of many artists whose work has been presented in previous projects and the Biennale for young art, can now be seen in museums, for example, the exhibition “Generation XXI” in the Tretyakov gallery, of which you speak. This means that the Moscow Biennale for young art performs its tasks and helping establish an artists.

don’t be tempted to move the Biennale?

Alexey Novoselov: For the next two years? This is a big break, besides, we held a contest in February and the results would save.

And the young will become middle-aged?

Alexey Novoselov: is not the Case. The continuity of the cultural process is very important. Especially in working with young art.

what are two parts of the main project?

Alexey Novoselov: From the results of the two parts of the contest among young artists and curators. Now we have four site-specific project for the Museum, which were selected by the Expert Council. This is the “screen Settings” of Alice Alliancewas (Russia/Austria), “I look at you you look at me” Igor Aircraft (Russia), “Screen” Roma Bogdanov (Russia) and “untitled (All slightly different)” Alina Glazun (Russia). A fifth project – video “Out of time”. Sasha Pirogova (Russia), made with the support of the Biennale, will be shown in November in the second part of the main project.

the fact that all the artists from Russia, is associated with a pandemic?

Alexey Novoselov: No. As I said, we have made a selection of these projects before introduced measures against the pandemic. We had 370 entries from 64 countries. I think this is due to the fact that Russian artists better represented the space of the Museum of Moscow and the city with which they were asked to work.

the Second competition was among the curators?

Alexey Novoselov: Yes, we wanted to support the initiative of young curators. Of the 112 entries from 26 countries of the Expert Council selected four projects instead of the planned two. So share them in time. The fourth project will show in the spring of 2021 in the Education center MMOMA, Ermolaevsky pereulok. This project “Our world is on the March!” the curator from India Abigana Toto, who now works in Thailand and South Korea. By the way, it was nice to know that he has recently received a grant from the Garage. This coincidence pleases and confirms the validity of our choice.

Other three projects will be shown at the Museum of Moscow?

Alexey Novoselov: Yes, in November. In fact it is two exhibitions and one project of Elsa Abdulkhakova (Russia) related to contemporary dance and performance. It’s called “the Forbidden language of the body”. As for exhibitions, it is a joint project of Lizaveta Matveeva and Francesca Altamura (Russia and US) “I don’t know the Earth is spinning or not..” and Julia’s Morale and Sterre of Barentsen (Italy and Germany/Netherlands) “Private place//Archive space.” Architectural Bureau “NEEDLES” from St. Petersburg will help to place these three projects in the second building of the Museum of Moscow. Also in our program – nine projects with “ROSIZO”, the fair for young art blazar, gallery “Salsola GROUND”, Association “showrooms Moscow”, Cube.Moscow, Center of Voznesensk and Moscow international festival of experimental film MIEFF, extensive education and the parallel program.

How did the story with several supervisors? This is a quite unusual move. Traditionally, is the main project, and then a bunch of parallel. You have made fin fact three main projects, the fourth moved in the spring.

Alexey Novoselov: We decided this year to focus on the competition for curators. Each curator involved in the project are about 20 artists. Thus, curatorial competition gives the opportunity for curators to Express themselves, and as many artists to include in the process. This is an important ligament, which stimulates development. Due to the fact that we have selected four curatorial project, we can give a more complete picture of searching by young contemporary artists.

air service to most countries is closed because of the pandemic. How will you bring works?

Alexey Novoselov: unfortunately, we do not bring participants, and even partially refuse transport work. Some projects will be done here, working on sketches of artists, according to instructions, communicating online. I understand that online formats are all a bit tired though and got used to it. We look for new forms of representation, to focus on showing the process of creating projects, direct communication of the audience with the artists.

List of participants has already been approved?

Alexey Novoselov: Final yet. Now we together with the curators and artists are working on ways to adapt projects to new conditions. The list of artists projects will be announced in mid-September.

What is the budget of the Biennale?

Alexey Novoselov: We try to keep the basic budget as in the previous project – 30 million per year of the project.

And sponsored part of the budget?

Alexey Novoselov: In General, this Biennale project to implement as we had planned, still need about 15 million. Partners who have been with us for years, have already confirmed their participation. The search for new partners, unfortunately, is difficult now, but I’m sure we’ll manage.
