For the Arkhangelsk pulp and paper mill, which in 2020 celebrates its 80th anniversary, work in the field of environmental protection is an integral part of the activities. And it’s not just billions of dollars of investments in “green” development, but also the personal contribution of workers who daily make the soul of the future of the enterprise. To the professional holiday plant traditionally encourages its employees: this year, 14 employees of the company will be awarded the corporate letters.

the Climate agenda in the work of the APPM is continuously present for more than 20 years. Today the company is one of the leaders in pulp and paper production in Russia for the introduction and application of environmentally sound technologies. The main goal is the consistent reduction of negative impact of production on the environment and striving to achieve the best international standards in the field of ecology. According to the rating RAEX mill joined in the TOP 3 among Russian companies for the costs of environmental protection investments in environmental protection amount to about three percent of revenues. Investment plant in the implementation of environmental measures, introduction of best available technologies over the past 10 years amounted to 14 billion rubles. Of them last year – 2.9 billion. As a result, over the last 10 years has dropped a fence (withdrawal) water resources from water object 17 percent, the discharge of pollutants into a water body 25, the release of contaminants into the atmosphere – 35, and the disposal of production waste disposal objects of waste by 84 percent.

knowing your role in preventing climate change, the plant regularly takes part in international project on disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions to The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). At the end of the reporting campaign 2018 APPM has the highest rating among Russian companies: “A-“

In October last year at the plant during the production of pulp declined to sodium hypochlorite as a bleaching agent and switched to the use of hydrogen peroxide. This change in bleaching technologies will allow the company to produce a fully bleached sulphate pulp technology ЕСF (without the use of elemental chlorine). This technology is a recognized industrial and environmental trend, ensuring acceptable impacts on the environment.

In 2020, the company received official international status of the “green point” of the North of Russia. In early February, Sweden was held the meeting of the heads of environmental departments of the countries of the region, which marked the effective cooperation of Russia with Finland, Norway and Sweden in the framework of the Council of the Barents Euro-Arctic region (BEAC). Based on the discussions ellulose paper mill in Arkhangelsk region, Arkhangelsk pulp and paper mill including, as in compliance with Russian environmental legislation, international requirements and excluded from the Barents sheet “hot spots” as potential sources of environmental contamination by dioxins (A9-1). Thus, the works included in the environmental white sheet, brilliantly completing the second round of getting a new status: three years ago, the company was excluded from the list of environmental “hot spots” of the Arctic at the conference of environment Ministers of BEAC in the city of vadsø (Norway).

But despite the obvious successes in environmental protection, the company continues to improve environmental performance. At the end of August the mill will be 80 years old. To this date it is planned to launch the new evaporator plant of Valmet worth 6.5 billion rubles. This is a key step of priority investment projects in forest development “Reconstruction of cardboard production”. In addition to the business component of a new evaporation station will create a great environmental impact for the entire region. In the framework of the construction of the facility is equipped with three fire-tube boiler designed for burning malodorous gases in the cooking process of hemicellulose and on the evaporator plant. Emissions from the boilers shall also be cleaned in gas cleaning equipment installed. Project the degree of purification will be 99.9 percent. Valmet has created for the evaporator plant of new generation integrated system NCG.

With the preparations of the station for the opening familiarized themselves acting Governor of the Arkhangelsk region Alexander Tsybulsky, who visited the plant on may 28. As told the Director General of the company Dmitry Zylev, the company approved the development Strategy until 2025, in which in production will invest another 20 billion rubles, and the total amount of cooking of cellulose and hemicellulose will exceed one million tons per year. With increased production the company intends to significantly reduce the negative impact on the environment: to reduce water consumption by 50, to reduce emissions by 65, the discharge of sewage by 75 per cent, greenhouse gases by 1 per cent in the equivalent CO2, or by 18 thousand tons compared to the beginning of the reconstruction of production.

Being on the first positions of the climatic rating, the plant steadily increased the share of “climate-friendly” fuels in the fuel balance of the enterprise. According to strategy-2025 APPM completely eliminate the use of coal and move to natural gas and renewable fuels. Now the company is gradually implementing fundamental modernization of the entire energy system, which includes the transfer from fuel oil to natural gas lime regeneration kilns for the production of cardboard and pulp, eriod gas in four existing coal-fired boilers and the construction of three new gas boilers at TPP-1, the replacement of two turbines (capacity of 60 MW and 30 MW). By implementing a strategy of effective use of all available resources of biofuels, the company is considering the issue of implementation of innovative project for extraction of landfill gas and using it for their own use as fuel.

In the subprogramme at the end of June is expected commissioning of new innovative EnergoData N 9 with modern, highly efficient gas cleaning equipment worth 1.6 billion rubles: here we will use an innovative environmentally friendly method of burning solid fuel in low-emission vortex burner. In addition, after commissioning of the new boiler out of operation will appear outdated energy equipment.

the head of the Arkhangelsk pulp and paper mill drew the attention of Alexander Tsybulsky and on the environmental component of the project implementation complete gasification plant: the transition to natural gas will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

the Key work of the enterprise in 2020 is the preparation of materials for obtaining integrated environmental permits. The company develops solutions in the area of extended responsibility of production; knows and controls the carbon intensity of its products; conducts active work aimed to equip the sources of pollution of the environment with automatic control means; supports and implements its own environmental education projects.

In 2019 allegations of APPM greenhouse gas emissions for 2018 were successfully verified for compliance with the requirements of ISO 14064-1-2006.

the company became a partner of the annual worldwide WWF “Earth Hour”.

According to the results of four years of work on CHP-1 multi-fuel boiler company Valmet, in which the fuel is a fuel mixture of sewage sludge (WWS) and bark and wood wastes (BWW), the plant achieved not only a zero-measure solid waste disposal of biomass to landfill, but mainly the effective use of biofuels instead of coal.

Recognizing the danger and disastrous consequences of global climate change for humans and the environment, as well as assessing climate risk and threats to their own economic, production and financial activities, Arkhangelsk PPM has adopted its own low-carbon development strategy for the period up to 2030.

In the framework of the environmental socio-educational project “Acosta” in the Arkhangelsk region the Arkhangelsk pulp and paper mill became the initiator and organizer of the first and second children’s environmental conferences. The event was attended by 120 children delegates.
