At FC Bayern there is simply no peace. On Thursday evening, several media reported unanimously that superstar Robert Lewandowski had decided against extending his contract, which expired in 2023, and had already informed those responsible last week.
The reason: the hesitant behavior of those responsible in poker for his new contract. The first meeting between the bosses and consultant Pini Zahavi only took place at the end of April, but according to a report by “Bild” he still hadn’t been given a concrete offer. The Pole is therefore annoyed and now wants to switch to FC Barcelona.
The Lewandowski personnel is not the first in which the bosses Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn do not give a good picture. Most recently, the action taken by those responsible for Bayern repeatedly caused trouble among negotiating partners – sometimes with serious consequences. A look back at the past few months:
The fact that a German international from FC Bayern decides against an extension and also joins arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund of all places is a real slap in the face for the self-image of the record champions. That is exactly what happened in the case of Niklas Süle.
Short, compact, clear
Hasan Salihamidzic justified the failed negotiations with the central defender by saying that there was not enough change for an extension. It can be heard from Dortmund that the financial aspect was not the decisive point. Instead, the bosses would have convinced the player in conversation on an interpersonal level.
Only he knows exactly what prompted Süle to switch to the pot. But it is also clear: at some point the players were quite annoyed by the behavior of those responsible for Bayern.
According to consultant Volker Struth, Salihamidzic only “did talk about a new contract six or seven months before the end of the contract”. But Süle had already decided against an extension. Also due to a lack of appreciation, as he was not satisfied with the way those responsible dealt with his cruciate ligament tear in 2019.
Nico Schlotterbeck is the second national defender to join Borussia Dortmund this summer. Bayern also had him on their list because of his outstanding performances this season. According to “Sport Bild”, the fact that a move to Munich didn’t work out in the end was due to the fact that those responsible took action too late.
Accordingly, shortly before the transfer to BVB was completed, coach Julian Nagelsmann unsuccessfully tried to convince the central defender to switch to Bayern over the phone. According to the report, those responsible did not give him the feeling that they really wanted him.
In the meantime, Bayern were also interested in Antonio Rüdiger, and it is very likely that he will not move to Munich either.
In winter, the central defender, who will leave Chelsea after the end of his contract in the summer, was traded at Bayern as Süle’s successor. After a conversation with the Rüdiger side, interest is said to have cooled off again due to the salary demands.
As the “Bild” reports, after the embarrassing Champions League defeat against FC Villarreal, the Bayern bosses reconsidered. Accordingly, Salihamidzic contacted the national player’s agent and offered him a five-year contract. Since they were already in advanced talks with Real Madrid at that time, they refused.
While Bayern have already extended Thomas Müller, the future of captain Manuel Neuer is still unclear. The goalkeeper’s contract expires in the summer of 2023, and an extension is very likely. Despite declarations of intent from both sides, there has still been no notification of completion.
The fact that Bayern take a long time to create facts, even with such important personal details, is not a new phenomenon. In addition to Lewandowski and Neuer, Serge Gnabry is another regular player whose contract expires in 2023. Negotiations with him have also been dragging on for some time – a sale in the summer is not out of the question.
With forward-looking squad planning, such cases should not occur in this frequency. In any case, it cannot be in Bayern’s interest for other players to lose patience while waiting for a new contract.
