“Goodbye Germany!” back to Zanzibar with Angela “Angie” Wolf (45) and husband Paulo Moleli Mianga (30), who now also wanted to celebrate their wedding after the civil ceremony. When VOX first visited the Munich woman and the Maasai in 2019, hardly any fan of the docu-soap wanted to believe in the unequal couple: the age difference, the different cultures, the head-over-heels action – too much seemed to speak against the connection. Even TV star Daniela Katzenberger (35), herself known for “Goodbye Germany!”, admitted: “I would have bet my ass… it would go wrong!”

But lo and behold: Four and a half years after they met, the trained hairdresser and the former cowherd were still together, ran a paradise-like lodge for tourists together and now wanted to crown their love with a wedding ceremony according to Maasai tradition.

Angela had only visited Paulo’s home village on the Tanzanian mainland once before, which, as she recalls, was a “rock-hard” experience. Not only because, as a tattooed white woman, she was looked at with curiosity and touched for days. At first it was “still very sweet”, but at some point it was difficult to bear. She also had to get used to the sleeping situation: “Two baby goats slept with us. Then a hen slept in the bed with us, who had just hatched her children…” What would she expect this time?

Now – shortly after the arrival of the two – Paulo’s mother greeted him with his four-year-old daughter, of whom Angie, unlike the VOX team, already knew: “When he just found out that he had a child, he gave it to me I said that straight away.” She was surprised by this, but was able to accept it. Where is the child’s mother? Paulo claimed that she married someone else.

Was that true? After all, it’s not uncommon in his culture to have more than one wife. His father, for example, has six wives, one of whom “inherited” from his deceased brother. How many (half) siblings does he have? “Maybe 100?” Paulo speculated. He doesn’t know exactly. He himself only has Angela as a wife, he asserted.

But even though she trusted her lover: residual doubts remained – and were fueled when a little later a loudly crying woman rushed towards Paulo, bowed to him and grabbed the tail of his shirt, during which he hardly showed any emotion and Angela and her friend and maid of honor Andrea Kick ( 49) stood by, irritated. Should Paulo drive on two tracks after all? Who was this woman and how did you explain her behavior?

“This is my sister. We haven’t seen each other for ten years,” explained Paulo. Angela remained skeptical and asked why Paulo himself wasn’t openly happy. “Men don’t cry!” In addition, he wasn’t quite comfortable with the dramatic freaking out. In general: If he had a Maasai wife, then he would have to take care of her too, whereas he was with his Angie almost the whole time.

Ultimately, Paulo was able to convince his sweetheart: “What else can I do?” was her pragmatic conclusion. So the wedding could take place, including the traditional goat slaughter, even if vegetarian Andrea and animal-loving Angie would have liked to prevent that. “I married him. That’s why I also married his culture,” the bride said understandingly.

And so, bravely and with humor, she endured another ritual that no one had warned her about, which was extremely unappetizing for Europeans: first the master of ceremonies, then the village community, spat goat’s milk on the bridal couple! “My eyes burned like hell!” she lamented, laughing. “You got it in the eyes, that’s the most important thing,” Paulo said. Well, if that’s the case … then hopefully nothing should stand in the way of the future happiness of the two of them.
