The Texas Senate done gone and approved a proposal to build a fancy monument for them unborn kiddos on the Capitol grounds. Senator Tan Parker, a Republican from Flower Mound, is the brains behind this operation. He wants to plop down the “Texas Life Monument,” which would show a momma holding her unborn babe in a world-shaped womb. It’s gonna be set up just north of the Capitol building if everything goes as planned.
Parker reckons this statue will be a nice spot for folks to come together and honor the dignity of human life and give a shoutout to all the mamas out there. He thinks these are some real important values that lots of Texans can get behind.
This ain’t the first time Parker has tried to get this statue up and running. Back in 2023, a similar idea made it through the Senate but then kicked the bucket in the House. But now he’s back at it again, hoping to make it happen this time around.
The monument is gonna be a spitting image of the “National Life Monument” made by some artist named Timothy Schmalz. It’ll join a whole bunch of other memorials and statues already hanging out on the Capitol grounds, celebrating different folks and events from Texas and American history.
The deal is that private donors gotta foot the bill for this monument, and it needs to be put up real soon. Ashley Sosa, who works for the Texas Alliance for Life, told the Senate committee last month that the statue is all finished and ready to go.
All this is going down while Texas is cracking down hard on abortion, thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court giving Roe v. Wade the boot back in 2022. Right now, pretty much all abortions are a no-go, no matter what. The only exception is if the pregnant person’s life is in danger, which has got some docs scratching their heads ’cause the rule ain’t all that clear.
Over in the Texas House, they’re also looking at a similar proposal. Both houses gotta give the thumbs up before this statue can be installed by the State Preservation Board.
