Finland’s head of state has spoken out in favor of an immediate application for their country to join NATO. Finland has been neutral towards NATO for decades. Russia’s neighbor’s attack on Ukraine changed that. Finland finally wants to be free – really free.

Finlandization – that was also a dirty word in Finland itself. No wonder, because Finlandization was a national disgrace. Finlandization, that was the consequence of the balance of power. The Finns had to submit to the military superiority of the largest country in the world (Russia) in order to save their national sovereignty.

Voluntary submission is now at an end. Finland finally wants to be free – really free. And not just as freely as a dictator in a neighboring country allows. Therefore, one can state, beyond all military-strategic considerations: the Finnish decision to enter the Western Defense Alliance 75 years after the Finnish-Russian “Friendship Treaty” is a decision for democratic, sovereign freedom.

Ultimately, Finland is only now becoming what is called a fully sovereign state. End of voluntary submission means – freedom of thought. Finland will be able to rewrite its textbooks, and the consideration of Russian interests in the way of “anticipated obedience” even in literature is now over.

After NATO’s eastward expansion, now NATO’s northward expansion. The western defense alliance is now also becoming Russia’s neighbor along Finland’s eastern border. Russia can rejoice: it is a peaceful neighbor. However, he knows how to protect himself from the attacks of his bad-tempered neighbors and his attempts to ruthlessly enlarge his own property.

Before some very worried alleged German intellectuals try to reinterpret the whole thing as an aggressive act against Russia, they should perhaps ask themselves the following question, as should the AfD and the left: Russia – what kind of country is it that everyone run away?
