Moscow rejects the claims of the US regarding possible Russian violations of the provisions of the biological weapons Convention (BWC), as groundless and untenable, says the commentary of the Department of information and press of the Russian foreign Ministry in connection with the report of U.S. arms control.

In late June the state Department released a report on countries ‘ compliance with agreements in the field of arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament. In the section on the implementation of the Russian Federation of the provisions of the BTWC, stated that compliance by Moscow for many years a concern of the United States. In particular, it is argued that Russia allegedly not fulfilled its obligations for the destruction or conversion for peaceful purposes of the facilities for production of biological weapons.

"the Activity of Russia in the biomedical field is purely peaceful and fully consistent with the BTWC obligations. This is confirmed, in particular, annually provided by our country as part of confidence-building measures of the BTWC", – stated in the message of the Ministry.

The Russian foreign Ministry noted that "such speculation is another attempt to divert international attention from their own opaque and unseemly activity in this sensitive area".

"Replicable USA unsubstantiated claims about a possible Russian violations of the provisions of the BTWC on the basis of unsubstantiated speculation about the alleged relationship between the Soviet biological programs and conducted by the country research in Microbiology completely unfounded", – said the Agency.

The Convention on the prohibition of the development, production and stockpiling of bacteriological (biological) and toxin weapons and on their destruction (BTWC) was the first international Treaty banning a whole class of weapons of mass destruction.

Earlier, foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that the US almost single-handedly block the creation of a verification mechanism for the BTWC.
