The Bobsleigh World Championships in St. Moritz start on Friday with the first two runs in the women’s two-man bobsleigh. Laura Nolte from Winterberg, who had already won gold in the monobob in St. Moritz, is again one of the favorites as the two-man Olympic champion in Beijing.

The women’s races three and four follow on Saturday. In addition, the first two rounds in the four-man bobsleigh will then take place. In the big sled, two-man world champion Johannes Lochner wants to beat the dominator Francesco Friedrich again on the natural ice rink in Engadin, Switzerland. The decision will be made on Sunday.

A drop in temperature saved the Bobsleigh World Championships on the traditional natural ice rink in St. Moritz. But the worries remain. “If you look at the climate development, then unfortunately you have to fear that this World Cup in St. Moritz could be the last. That would be a pity, because the natural ice rink is considered the cradle of bobsleigh and skeleton sports,” said Andreas Trautvetter, Vice President of the World Association IBSF, the German Press Agency.

The natural ice channel in the Swiss Engadin is recreated every November with 15,000 cubic meters of snow and 10,000 liters of water – allegedly without any chemical substances. Environmental compatibility is suddenly the top priority for officials.
