(Los Angeles) The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to dominate the North American box office and reached $1 billion in worldwide revenue, a first this year, according to estimates by specialist firm Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.

The animated film inspired by the game of the same name, produced by Universal, Nintendo and Illumination studios, made this weekend in Canada and the United States $ 40 million, thus remaining at the top of the ranking.

Since its Easter weekend release, the animated movie has racked up more than $490 million in North America and an additional $532 million across the rest of the world, according to Exhibitor, for a worldwide total of $1.02 billion in four weeks.

It is the first feature film to cross that threshold this year, and only the 10th animated film, according to trade magazine The Hollywood Reporter.

The overalls-and-mustache plumber is ahead of Warner Bros. horror film Evil Dead Rise at the North American box office, which for its second weekend in North American theaters recorded $12.2 million in revenue.

Actresses Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland star in this bloodbath, playing two sisters who must battle a slew of demonic creatures.

In third place with 6.8 million is a newcomer: Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret, comedy-drama about adolescence, adapted from a children’s literature classic by author Judy Blume. “A good start” for such a film, analyzes expert David Gross, noting “rave reviews and audience reactions”.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is still doing well after six weeks in operation, ranking fourth with $5 million. In this new chapter of the hit saga, Keanu Reeves reprises his role as a hitman fighting an international criminal group.

And in fifth place is The Return of the Force: Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi has raised $4.8 million for a new release, 40 years after the release of this legendary film starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.
