In some federal states, Corpus Christi, June 16, 2022, is a public holiday. Normally all supermarkets are closed on such days. In the following, we will tell you in which major cities you can still shop.
Corpus Christi is not a public holiday everywhere. The following federal states have Thursday off:
In Thuringia and Saxony, the holiday only applies to regions that are predominantly Catholic. For the remaining federal states, June 16, 2022 is a regular working day.
In regions where Corpus Christi is a public holiday, most shops remain closed throughout the day. However, there are some exceptions to this rule and special opening times, especially in large cities.
Corpus Christi has been celebrated since 1209 as a high festival for Catholic Christians on the second Thursday after Pentecost.
The festival goes back to the last supper of Jesus, where he gave his disciples bread and wine. The Catholic Church and its followers celebrate on Corpus Christi that Jesus is still with them with bread and wine. Read more about this here.
On Corpus Christi, many often magnificent processions take place, in which the communion children usually go along again in their festive robes. In many communities, the procession paths are specially decorated with flags, small altars and flowers. In some regions there are colorful carpets of flowers, some of which are several hundred meters long.
All these big actions have to be canceled this time because it is too difficult to comply with the rules of distance and hygiene. Only a few dioceses, such as Trier or Cologne, allow Corpus Christi processions again under special hygiene conditions, provided they have been agreed with the local authorities. Others recommend holding open-air services, for example.
In the federal states, more and more easing is gradually coming into force. Depending on the local incidence values, the holiday can also be enjoyed in the beer garden – of course, taking into account the applicable hygiene rules. Here you will find an overview of the current regulations in your federal state.
