It is the tragic end of a journey for the men, women and children believed to be of Middle Eastern origin. Up to 15 people jumped from a freight train at Trudering S-Bahn station around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. A momentous decision, because some were hit by a violent electric shock. As a result, they sustained severe burns.

A driver was the only witness to the accident. Rescue workers, fire brigade, emergency doctors, federal police and the Munich police rushed to the scene of the accident.

The injured are apparently war refugees who traveled to Munich on the freight train to stay here. Most often, refugees are brought by smugglers to a train station on the Brenner Pass in Italy. Here they slit the roof tarpaulins on the wagons and abseil down. As soon as the train stops longer after the border, they jump off.

But that is dangerous. Train tracks have a voltage of 15,000 volts. In rainy weather, you don’t even have to touch the rails for an overvoltage and arcing to occur. The resulting burns can be fatal.

The police could not say in the afternoon whether this was the case with the accident victims in Trudering. A 25-year-old man, a young woman and a 10-year-old girl were seriously injured.

“Investigations are currently taking place in the Munich hospitals,” said a police spokesman. One does not have to reckon with an acute death of those affected, but “mortal danger cannot be ruled out”. In the event of an electric shock, those affected can still die of heart failure days later.

Not all refugees were injured in the jump. The police picked up six people shortly after the accident. They are currently being interrogated with the help of a Kurdish interpreter to find out more about their origins. According to the police, two people were still fleeing in the afternoon and were being searched for by helicopter.

A father from NRW lost his driver’s license. The reason is excessive speed. The special thing about the story: The 32-year-old drove his unconscious daughter to a clinic and was even escorted by the police.
