(Conqueiros) The oldest dog in the world recently celebrated its 31st birthday, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo dog, a Portuguese breed, celebrated his birthday at a party on Saturday at his home in the Portuguese village of Conqueiros, where he has lived all his life.

More than 100 people attended this “very traditional” Portuguese party, owner Leonel Costa said.

Local meats and fish were served to around 100 guests, with a supplement for Bobi, who only eats human food. A troupe of dancers also performed and Bobi took part in one of their choreographies.

Costa has had several senior dogs in the past, including Bobi’s mother, Gira, who lived to be 18. However, Costa said he never imagined one of his dogs would reach their thirties.

“We see this kind of situation as a normal result of the life they lead, but Bobi is one of a kind,” Costa said.

One of the main factors in Bobi’s longevity is the “calm and peaceful environment” he lives in, according to Costa.

Throughout his life, Bobi roamed freely in the forests surrounding the Costa home. He was never chained or leashed.

This “very sociable” dog never felt alone because he grew up surrounded by many other animals, according to Costa.

Today, Bobi has difficulty walking and prefers to stay in the yard of the house. His eyesight has deteriorated, so he often bumps into things when he walks. Just like older humans, Bobi sleeps a lot. He immediately lies down in his bed after eating, although on cold days he chooses to take a nap by the fire, his owner has revealed.

Bobi’s date of birth was confirmed by the Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria, which registered Bobi in 1992.

His age was also verified by a Portuguese government-authorized pet database.

Mr. Costa, who is now 38, was only 8 years old when Bobi was born. For him, Bobi is a living reminder of the past.

“Bobi is special because to watch him is to remember people who were part of our family and who are unfortunately no longer here, like my father, my brother or my grandparents who have already left this world,” said Mr Costa. Bobi represents these generations. »
