German scientists have found that rinsing with a liquid for the mouth may reduce the risk of transmission of coronavirus, according to a study published on the website of the German Ruhr University.

The study was conducted by a team of scientists from the research group molecular and medical Virology, Ruhr University Bochum jointly with the scientists from Jena, Ulm, Duisburg-Essen, Nuremberg and Bremen. The results of the experiments showed that the cells of the virus Sars-Cov-2 "disabling" liquids for rinsing the mouth.

Researchers have tested eight liquids for mouth rinses with different ingredients, which are sold in pharmacies in Germany. They mixed every liquid for rinsing of mouth with viral particles of Sars-Cov-2 and shake the mixture for 30 seconds to simulate the effect of mouthwash.

The result of the study showed that all of the liquid for rinsing reduced the initial titer of the virus. In cases where "rinse" was conducted three times in a row, the titer decreased to such an extent that the virus could not be detected.

The authors, however, note that the liquid rinses do not kill the virus but can help reduce the risk of proliferation.

"rinsing with a liquid for mouth can not suppress the production of viruses in cells. But maybe in the short term to reduce viral load to where there is greatest risk of infection, namely in the mouth and throat," said lead scientist of the study Tony Maester.
