Former Brandenburg member of the Bundestag Peter Dankert has died at the age of 82. This was announced by the SPD Brandenburg. The party mourns the loss of a high-profile, combative and hands-on comrade, federal and local politician and a fighter for social democratic values, it said.

“The news of Peter Dankert’s death hit me hard,” said SPD state chairman and Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke. “He was a political worker, legal expert, advisor and trusted friend. I will miss him. His death is a great loss for the SPD Brandenburg.”

Born in Berlin, Dankert initially worked as a lawyer before moving to Brandenburg and into politics in the 1990s. For a long time he was chairman and most recently honorary chairman of the SPD Dahme-Spreewald. In 1998 he was directly elected to the Bundestag in the Luckenwalde/Jüterbog/Zossen/Königs Wusterhausen constituency, of which he was a member until 2013. From 2005 to 2009 he was chairman of the sports committee.
