Street dog Sammy was supposed to be handed over to his new owner at Munich Airport. But the six-month-old four-legged friend escaped. The search for him, which lasted more than a week, is now coming to a happy end.

Dog “Sammy” was wandering around Munich Airport for more than a week, now he is safe again. With the help of a live trap, the six-month-old four-legged friend was caught on Wednesday night in Oberding (Erding district), the police said. Sammy was slightly emaciated, but otherwise in a “safe condition”. After a visit to the veterinary clinic, he should soon be allowed to go back to his owner.

According to the police, “Sammy” was adopted as a foreign street dog and was to be handed over to his new owner at the airport on Monday last week. But the animal freed itself from its harness and ran away. In addition to the airport and the police, the Munich animal search aid was also involved in the extensive search operation in the days that followed.

Shortly after the escape, the first feeding stations were set up and cameras set up, said Michaela Kirchmeier from the animal search aid in Munich. In this way, the approximate whereabouts of the dog could be determined relatively quickly and it was found: “Sammy is fine. Experienced”.

Since some people went looking for the dog themselves after the first reports about the escaped dog, it soon withdrew to the hinterland of the airport and set up shop there. “The escaped dog’s survival mode kicks in quickly,” Kirchmeier said. Most of the time, the four-legged friends would not starve or die of thirst in such a situation. Rather, roads and rails, for example, pose a danger.

On Tuesday morning, the animal search help set up a live trap in the area where “Sammy” was suspected based on sighting reports. On the night of Wednesday he then entered the large cage in search of the food inside and triggered the light barrier – the flap of the cage fell shut.

According to the animal search help, a helper was on site in a few minutes, picked up the escaped dog and took him to a veterinarian. “Sammy” is doing well, according to Kirchmeier, he only lost a few grams on his adventurous escape – “Of course there was no eating to our stomachs.”
