Sérgio Vieira appointed as new Portimonense coach

Sérgio Vieira, who recently left his position as head coach of Estrela da Amadora, has been named as the new coach of Portimonense, according to Record. The 41-year-old coach has signed a two-year contract that is expected to be officially announced in the coming hours, succeeding Paulo Sérgio in the role. Paulo Sérgio was unable to prevent the relegation of the Algarve club to the second division.

After two seasons at Reboleira, which included promotion to the top division and securing survival in the last campaign, Sérgio Vieira returns to the Algarve, where he previously managed Farense for a season and a half, also achieving promotion to the top tier in 2019/20. The coach, hailing from Póvoa de Lanhoso, had offers from Casa Pia and AVS SAD, but chose the project presented by Portimonense’s SAD. It is worth noting that the club’s management, led by Rodiney Sampaio, is keeping an eye on Boavista’s situation, as they may face relegation to the second division if they fail to prove they have no outstanding debts. If this happens, it would secure Portimonense’s top-flight status through administrative means for the third time, following the instances in 2019/20 (V. Setúbal’s relegation) and 2003/04 (Salgueiros’ relegation).

Portimonense’s SAD has since confirmed the hiring of the coach. (updated at 13:50 with official confirmation)
