In April, inflation was over 7 percent. Consumers had to dig much deeper into their pockets for food and energy. Some products are now cheaper than in 2021. FOCUS Online shows where consumers pay more – and where it is cheaper.

As a result of the Ukraine war, grain imports to Germany in particular have become massively more expensive. According to the Federal Statistical Office, import prices rose by a strong 53.6 percent in March compared to the same month last year. The last strong increase was in May 2011, when it was 74.0 percent. The price increases affect all types of grain.

Not an isolated case.

In the past few weeks and months, many products have become massively more expensive as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. This is also changing the purchasing behavior of German citizens.

In view of the rising food prices, customers are increasingly turning to cheap groceries. The regional association Edeka Minden-Hannover recently recorded up to five percent more demand for private labels such as “gut

Within a month, prices in supermarkets rose by 8.6 percent. As a reminder: In March 2022, prices had risen by 6.2 percent. Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Edeka and Co. now change their shelf prices every two days.

The Federal Statistical Office reports a small drop in energy prices within 30 days. Light heating oil was 20.3 percent cheaper in April 2022 and the price of diesel and petrol fell by 5.7 percent on average.

Go to the supermarket with a full stomach and a shopping list. If the brand offer is sold out, go for your own brand.

Don’t be blinded by exhibitors or other lures.

Stock up on long-life foods. The following applies: Don’t hoard, but shop wisely.
