According to the announcement, Federico Gutiérrez was involved in a car accident with his brother Max, also a racing driver, on Thursday. The two brothers reportedly crashed their car into another vehicle on Mexico’s Toluca-Valle de Bravo highway.
Federico did not survive the accident, his brother Max was taken to the hospital by helicopter and is now in a stable condition.
The people who were in the other car also had to be taken to the hospital. There is no information about their exact condition. As the Spanish newspaper “El País” reports, Federico Gutiérrez’s father reported the 80-year-old driver of the other car.
Stock car motorsport racing series Nascar tweeted a statement on the death of the young Mexican: “The NASCAR Mexico Series sympathizes with the Gutierrez family’s grief at the passing of our driver and friend Federico Gutierrez Hoppe.”
Gutiérrez’ Team AM Racing is also mourning the 17-year-old. “AM Racing extends its deepest condolences to the Gutierrez family for the loss of their son Federico. Fico was a big member of the AM Racing family and was often at the track with his brother Max last season. We will always cherish these memories. Our thoughts and prayers are not only with the family but also with Max during his recovery and grieving process.”
Fedrico Gutiérrez started his career in 2010 on the karting track. He was the youngest driver to take part in the 24-hour race in Mexico. Last season he was named Rookie of the Year in the Nascar México Challenge Series.
