After the resignation of Interior Minister Roger Lewentz (SPD) as a result of the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, the CDU is now also demanding political consequences from the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer (SPD).
“Prime Minister Dreyer is trying desperately to give the impression that she has nothing to do with all of this,” Christian Baldauf, leader of the CDU opposition in the state parliament, told Bild am Sonntag: “She is responsible for ensuring that the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of the Environment July 14 not sufficiently communicated. As a result, opportunities to warn people early and save them were lost.”
The Dreyer cabinet failed with serious consequences, Baldauf continued: “This is a political declaration of bankruptcy for the Dreyer government.” and crisis management collapsed. There wasn’t even a briefing.”

For former Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU), Lewentz’s resignation was not due to the insight that the facts were too overwhelming or that it was morally decency. Klöckner said in the direction of Dreyer: “One thing is decisive for them: Does it damage their image and is the published opinion for or against them. This opinion turned against Ms. Dreyer, so Mr. Lewentz had to go.”
In an INSA survey for BamS on Friday (1000 respondents), 70 percent rated Dreyer’s government’s crisis management as bad, only 16 percent as good. 44 percent believe that the prime minister should resign. 28 percent are against it.
