An active US military serviceman stationed in Stuttgart was reported as the first known case of monkeypox in the military. A spokesman for the United States’ European Command told CNN in a statement.
The soldier recently tested positive for monkeypox,” United States European Command spokesman William Speaks said in an official statement. “The individual was treated at the Stuttgart Army Hospital and is currently in isolation.” The infected individual is recovering is currently in quarters off base, he said.
Speaks said: “Health officials have determined that the risk to the general population is very low. As a precaution, the clinic staff who have been in contact with the patient will be screened. The case in Stuttgart is of the West African strain, which is generally mild and human-to-human transmission is limited.”
Military infectious disease experts had been on the lookout for cases of monkeypox for a long time. According to official information, the Pentagon only recently asked the Army’s Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases what testing options were available in the event of a major outbreak.
The monkeypox virus spreads primarily through direct contact with bodily fluids or wounds of an infected person, or through contaminated materials such as bedding, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Researchers are still investigating other possible transmission routes, such as contact with an infected person’s semen or contact with an infected person who has no symptoms.
The CDC had 45 confirmed cases of monkeypox in 15 states and the greater Columbia area as of Thursday. The CDC said 1,356 cases of monkeypox and orthopoxviruses have been identified in 31 countries where monkeypox is not endemic.
