The representative of Ukraine in the working sub-group on political issues of the Trilateral contact group (TAG), head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on legal policy Andrey Kostin has called the conditions for holding local elections on uncontrollable Kiev territories of Donetsk and Lugansk regions. According to him, the electoral process can only begin after Ukraine’s control over the breakaway republics of Donbass and the border with Russia, and after the withdrawal of “all illegal armed groups”.
Kostin believes that otherwise it is impossible to hold elections, the freedom of which should be confirmed and the OSCE.
“Life will show, how real is this (the holding of local elections in October 2020 — approx. “Of the tape.ru”). But really our desire to achieve just such a result. (…) Obviously, there can be no elections under the Ukrainian legislation on the territory that is not controlled by Ukraine”, — said the politician.
He noted that after holding legitimate democratic elections will be possible to follow the path of reintegration of Donbass, and these issues can be on the level of consultations to do now. “Not right at the moment, but if we see that the negotiation process is somehow moving in that direction, you have something to gain, for the future,” — said Kostin.
Earlier, the head of the office of the President of Ukraine Andrey Ermak said that Kiev never conducted and will not conduct a direct dialogue with Donetsk and Lugansk. At the same time, Deputy Prime Minister for reintegration of the temporarily occupied territories Alexey Reznikov said that the Ukrainian authorities are not going to fix the special status of Donbass in the Constitution, as envisaged by the Minsk agreements.
