Ukraine blocked Russias resolution at UN

Ukraine has blocked the UN resolution Russia about the easing of sanctions in connection with the economic crisis on the background of the pandemic coronavirus. About this on his page in Facebook reported the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

According to the foreign Ministry, Russia has tried to ease the sanctions and introduced UN General Assembly resolution in March with the amended text. The Ukrainian delegation interrupted “procedure of silence” and blocked the initiative.

“As I promised at the beginning of April, we will continue to block Russia’s attempts to destroy the sanctions regime. To effectively combat the world with a pandemic, we need real solutions that will bear practical use. And certainly don’t need a politicized resolution, which aim to ease the sanctions,” — said the head of the foreign Ministry of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba.

He added that the UN General Assembly approved two important resolutions on the suppression of coronavirus, a co-author of which was the Ukraine.

“Our country has given the fight against the pandemic and effective and coordinated action by the international community. The overall aim is a victory over the virus, and not on sanctions for military aggression”, — he added.

In late March, Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, Syria, Nicaragua, Venezuela and North Korea urged to lift sanctions for the sake of combating coronavirus. The UN General Assembly refused to adopt the draft resolution.

EU countries, USA and Ukraine first imposed economic sanctions against Moscow in 2014. It happened after the Crimea according to the results of the referendum became part of Russia. The annexation of the Peninsula was deemed illegal, but Moscow denies these charges. Then in 2015, the sanctions were imposed because of the conflict in the Donbass. In response, Moscow imposed a ban on food imports from countries that supported sanctions.
