At the end of last year the head of the opposition Communist party of Japan Kazuo Seay said that Tokyo’s negotiations with Moscow must demand the entire Kuril archipelago, because it is “primordially Japanese territory”.
Speaker of the state Duma Vyacheslav Volodin has underlined that Russia sees the statement by the Japanese Communists as a threat to the territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that a peace Treaty with Moscow to Tokyo needs to recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Kuril Islands. The foreign Minister noted that in this case there will be an opportunity to discuss “everything else”.
