a Former colleague and friend of Professor Alexander Belyaev, who retired today from the life, Arkady Tishkov told “MK” about what he was and what a huge contribution made to the development of geographical science and media culture.
member-correspondent of the Russian Academy of Sciences, until recently, former Deputy Director of the Institute of geography RAS Arkady Tishkov science was a close friend of Professor Belyaev since 1973 and worked for many years with him side by side. For it was a major disaster the death of Alexander Vadimovich. But, on the other hand, he knew that the Professor has long struggled with the damn cancer….
– Sasha’s wife was an artist. She died three years ago from leukemia, says Arkady Alexandrovich Tishkov. But he by the time his wife died, and he was already sick. He was sick for almost eight years. The first time came down somewhere in the middle of the two thousandth. And then, later, opened this diagnosis. I think even then he was something.
We met with him during studying at the University. He studied at the faculty of geography, I – biological. He played in the student theater, I saw him there a few times. He was artistic, with great abilities.
Fifteen years we have clinics at the Institute of geography was close. He has been Deputy Director of the Institute, since the late 80-ies. In the most difficult time for our country. In the years of perestroika he, like all of us, saved the Institute and sought for its survival. Even tourism has been, carried groups of foreigners. And then originated the first attempts media activity Sasha. He was a pioneer in everything. The first developed a special program for the weather forecast on TV. It was the first map geksoprenalina (this first moving map) the political, domestic, social, and economic information. He was engaged in geographical accompaniment of television programs on different channels. Channel the Weather channel too, created with his participation.
Few people remember that the first gas-elections state automated system, with card – making group with the participation of Sasha Belyaeva. The first election where flashed, how many and who voted for whom: how many Communists as the liberal democratic party and so on, this all started in our Institute. Was published the multi-volume analysis, which regions voted for whom and so on. This is also Sasha. His artistry and basic geographical education, his desire to do something new, led to the fact that he became interested in these pioneer stories. We now have a fully digital TV, but 25 years ago, when it all began, it all was new, and he was actively involved in the process. Involved in it the young members of the Institute.
Probably many know that he attended a dozen programs, it was not only the weather forecast on TV. He led children’s programs, and educational, and led successfully. It is comparable with Nikolai Drozdov, with whom we were friends. Kohl’s thrushes, too, of our geographical circle. But Nicholas had quite a narrow focus, and Sasha a lot, where noted. Even played in some TV series.
He’s very persuasive, is open. He has a perfect voice. I’m reminded of how we went to the potatoes in 1973 from the University, and he organized the choir, and sang in the morning when going to work, and in the evening sang, when I went to work. He was very active, always had to think of something.
We lost a very bright, open, wonderful person. He was open, but at the same time, worldly wise. He was the soul of the company. And scientific component of it – hundreds of articles, books, Atlas is one party that no one forgets. A display direction is the second side of his life where he had many innovative things.
This is a great loss for science and for the media community.
What were the last years of his life?
After the death of his wife he lived in his house in the suburbs. Among the collections. He was one of Russia’s largest collectors of stamps and envelopes of the first payment. He collected them, systematized. We were made to have a commemorative cancellation stamp and envelope on the 23rd geographical Congress in Moscow. We worked in the organizing Committee of the Congress. And Sasha was very proud that he has a commemorative cancellation of the Congress. Him from all of the congresses were brought, he a very large collection of gathered he was well known experts… And in recent years he hasn’t moved, been sick, but have traveled with their virtual brands.
Two years ago it was the anniversary of our Institute, we invited him. He was, of course, is not in very good condition. All very warmly welcomed him….

I came on NTV in 1999 and it was the time of the “Golden composition” of NTV. For me it was an incredible pleasure to work in a team where all the stars where there was no simple ordinary journalist. We talked on NTV even have a “weatherman”, which differs from all! On NTV has changed, and until 2014 I was with Professor Belyaev. We rarely talked at work, but we knew that we were on the same team. And when our paths in the corridors of NTV still crossed, he was always friendly, always interested in how things like family, all the while joking, he had a great sense of humor. Intelligent people, these are no longer made. As they say, a Holy place is never empty, but in his case other this will not happen…He was considered man, very inquisitive. A great scholar, which is not enough. Great professional. I grieve along with all.
