Scientists: Patients with the coronavirus can infect after recovery

the Researchers found that half of patients who have been treated for mild forms of the infection COVID-19, still had the coronavirus within eight days after the disappearance of symptoms. The findings of scientists published in the American Internet journal of thoracic medicine of the American thoracic society. Thoracic medicine examines the organs of the chest.

Scientists reported on a study of 16 patients with COVID-19, they were treated and released from medical center of General hospital of PLA in Beijing from 28 January to 9 February 2020. The average age of the patients was 35.5 years.

the Researchers collected samples of smears from the throat, taken from all patients at different days after discharge, and analyzed them. Patients were discharged after recovery and confirmation of negative viral status, at least two consecutive tests polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

“the Most significant result of our study is that half of the patients continued to excrete the virus even after the elimination of his symptoms, said the study’s lead author, Dr. Sharma, working at the Yale school of medicine. – In more serious cases, the virus stayed in the body even greater amount of time.”

the Primary symptoms in these patients included fever, coughs, sore throat and shortness of breath (dyspnea). Patients were treated with several medicines.

the Time from infection to onset of symptoms (incubation period) was five days in all but one patient. The mean duration of symptoms was eight days, while the length of time during which patients remain contagious after their symptoms ranged from one to eight days. Two patients had diabetes and one had tuberculosis, none of which affect the timing and nature of the current infection COVID-19.

“If you have mild respiratory symptoms from COVID-19 and you are at home, not to infect people, extend your quarantine for two weeks after recovery, to make sure that you infect other people,” advised co-author of the study, Lixin Xie, doctor of medical Sciences, Professor, working in the Beijing General hospital.

In the US, a million people passed the test for coronavirus

Scientists also sent a letter to his colleagues: “Patients with COVID-19 can be contagious even after symptomatic recovery, so treat asymptomatic/ recently recovered patients as carefully as symptomatic patients.”

“further studies are Needed to determine whether the virus detected by real-time PCR finding in the later stages of infection COVID-19” – said Dr. Xie.
